Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, called on Israel to withdraw immediately from any Lebanese land it has occupied or entered.
The statement, made during his visit to Beirut on Monday, comes amid rising tensions in the region.
Speaking to reporters, Aboul Gheit emphasized the urgent need for Israel to respect United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which calls for a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon.
He underlined that the resolution is a “crucial decision” and must be implemented “in full and as quickly as possible.”
Aboul Gheit’s visit focused on reinforcing the Arab League’s stance on Lebanon’s sovereignty. During meetings with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, the Arab League chief highlighted several key priorities, including an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Lebanon.
He condemned any foreign interventions in Lebanese territory, stating that “tolerating the repetition of Gaza’s scenario in Lebanon would amount to complicity in the crime.”
The Arab League’s call for action comes in light of recent Israeli military actions in Lebanon, which have raised alarm in the region.
Aboul Gheit expressed his concern over the Security Council’s lack of response following Israel’s recent attacks on United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) troops.
Aboul Gheit’s visit to Lebanon, which included meetings with various Lebanese officials, underscores the Arab League’s continued commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability. His remarks aim to put pressure on the international community, particularly the United Nations, to take swift action and prevent further escalation in the region.
This diplomatic visit highlights the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, with Lebanon caught in the crossfire of regional conflicts. The call for an immediate Israeli withdrawal, paired with a push for a ceasefire, signals a critical juncture for peace efforts in Lebanon.
