Between July 17 and July 23, units of the Algerian army carried out several security operations, arresting 10 support elements for terrorist groups and thwarting the smuggling of more than 8 quintals (800 kilograms) of drugs.
According to the operational report from Algeria’s Ministry of National Defense, various units of the People’s National Army succeeded in “arresting 10 support elements for terrorist groups during separate operations across the national territory. Additionally, a road blocker named L. Attou was arrested with an SVD sniper rifle, a magazine, and 74 rounds of ammunition.”
Moreover, in coordination with various security services during operations across military regions, 24 drug traffickers were arrested. Efforts thwarted attempts to smuggle 8 quintals and 22 kilograms of processed cannabis across the border with Morocco, while 1.134 kilograms of cocaine and 27,257 hallucinogenic pills were seized.
The operations mentioned are part of Algeria’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and drug trafficking within its borders. Algeria has faced challenges from terrorist groups, particularly those linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and other affiliated organizations. The country’s extensive desert borders make it a target for drug traffickers, especially for cannabis coming from Morocco, a major producer. The interception of drugs and the arrest of those supporting terrorist activities highlight the ongoing security challenges Algeria faces and its proactive measures to maintain national and regional stability. These efforts are crucial in disrupting the interconnected networks of terrorism and drug trafficking in North Africa.
