Simultaneously with meetings of the Central Council for “Freedom and Change” with officials from the Arab League and the American Ambassador in Khartoum, John Godfrey, engaging in discussions with political and civil forces in Cairo, Yasser Arman, a leader in “Freedom and Change” and head of the Popular Movement-Democratic Revolutionary Current, revealed that the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) are facilitating talks for a dialogue among Sudanese civil parties on August 25th.
He warned against moves to involve the “National Congress” party (the former ruling party) and forces opposed to democratic transition in the country.
Arman pointed out that the African organizations are making efforts to unite civil forces and invite them for a national dialogue at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa with the participation of IGAD, in the absence of adequate preparation for the broad participation of the forces of change and the forces of the Sudanese revolution due to war conditions and other factors.
He said there are indications of the participation of Islamists from the National Congress and its fronts, and forces opposed to the democratic transition in this dialogue. He stressed that this would repeat the failed experiment of the “Salam Rotana Hotel” meeting in the capital Khartoum, which was boycotted by the forces of change.
In June 2022, the international tripartite mechanism for resolving the crisis in Sudan, composed of the United Nations, the African Union, and IGAD, suspended direct talks, which were scheduled to bring together representatives of the military council and the opposition, in addition to parties that cooperated with the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir.
