Kyiv was rocked by two explosions on Friday, accompanied by blaring air raid sirens, as a delegation of African leaders commenced a peace mission aimed at mediating the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The African delegation, consisting of leaders from South Africa, Senegal, the Comoros, and Egypt, arrived in Kyiv with the intention of meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Subsequently, they plan to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on Saturday.
Prior to their official meetings, the leaders visited Bucha, a town near Kyiv, where Ukraine alleges that Russian troops committed large-scale atrocities following their full-scale invasion in February 2022. Russia, on the other hand, denies these allegations.
Kyiv asserts that its own peace initiative, centered around the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, must form the foundation for any resolution to the ongoing war.
