The ruling Taliban government in Afghanistan banned on Wednesday any activities of Afghan political parties in the country.

The Justice Ministry stated that the reasoning behind banning the activities of political parties is that their existence has no real legitimate basis.

It has been two years since the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan and the country has been isolated globally and is struggling to kickstart its fledging economy.

A statement from the authorities hailed a victory that was able to “pave the way for the establishment of the Islamic system in Afghanistan”.

“The conquest of Kabul proved once again that no one can control the proud nation of Afghanistan” and that “no invader will be allowed to threaten the independence and freedom” of the country, it read.

On his part, António Guterres, Secretary-General of the UN, said: “The situation in the country remains deeply troubling, including the severe restrictions imposed on the rights of women and girls.

Guterres also affirmed that the international community must not forget the people of Afghanistan.
