Continuing their display of defiance against international pressures, the military leaders in Niger, who seized control through a coup last month, have established a new government. This development was conveyed through a decree broadcast on national television on Thursday.
The 21-member government will be led by Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, while generals from the newly formed military governing council will oversee the defence and interior ministries.
Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional bloc, are scheduled to convene on Thursday for an urgent summit focused on addressing the coup’s aftermath. This meeting comes after the country’s military leaders disregarded a deadline to reinstate the ousted president.
Approximately two weeks after the coup that removed Mohamed Bazoum from power, ECOWAS has voiced its pursuit of a diplomatic resolution while maintaining the possibility of employing force to resolve the crisis.
Significant decisions are anticipated to emerge from the gathering in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, as announced by the 15-member organization on Tuesday.
