The Iraqi Minister of Environment, Nizar Amidi, announced on Wednesday the launch of the strategy of the National Mine Action Service for the years 2023–2028.

In March, Nizar emphasized the country’s commitment to becoming mine-free by 2028, aligned with the Ottawa Treaty.

The tumultuous history of Iraq has left enduring marks of warfare, with the widespread presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance serving as grim reminders of the nation’s past conflicts.

According to both global and local assessments, Iraq currently holds the unenviable title of being the most contaminated country worldwide when it comes to landmines and unexploded ordnance.

These dangerous remnants of battles pose not only a grave risk to human lives but have also inflicted numerous injuries, often causing irreversible disabilities.
