The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, has affirmed the EU’s full support for all measures taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in response to the recent coup in Niger.

Borrell stated that the EU will firmly and promptly back these actions.

In a tweet on Monday, the EU’s foreign policy representative emphasized the importance of respecting the will of the Nigerien people, which was expressed through the election process.

He highlighted the significance of upholding democratic principles and respecting the voice of the citizens.
Last Friday, the European Union issued a warning of “immediate suspension” of the financial aid it provides to the Nigerien government.

This decision came as the leaders of the coup announced the appointment of General Abdoul Rahamane Chani as the head of the transitional council.

Nabila Massrali, the spokesperson for Borrell, condemned the coup in Niger in a statement.

She described the recent events in the capital, Niamey, and the detention of President Mohamed Bazoum in the presidential palace as a “serious attack on stability and democracy in Niger.”

The EU’s response underscores its commitment to supporting democratic values and institutions in the region.

The ECOWAS’ actions against the coup in Niger reflect a collective effort to preserve peace, stability, and democratic governance in the country.
