UN: AI Can Cause Widespread Damage

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has issued a stark warning about the potential long-term global risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI). He stressed the potential for this technology to inflict widespread harm.

Guterres stated: “AI tools can also be used by those with malicious intent. AI models can assist individuals in harming themselves and others on a massive scale.”

He pointed out that “The charter’s emphasis on protecting future generations gives us a clear mandate to bring all stakeholders together to collectively mitigate long-term global risks, and AI poses such a risk.”

The official further added that “The UN welcomes calls from member states to establish a new UN entity to address the need for regulations.”

According to Guterres, “The new UN apparatus could be inspired by models like the International Atomic Energy Agency or the International Civil Aviation Organization.”

The Secretary-General’s comments highlight the escalating concerns around the ethical use of AI and the growing call for international regulation to prevent potential misuse or harm.
