On Saturday, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, held bilateral talks with Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelaty, on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to a statement from Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting allowed both ministers to coordinate and consult on key issues on the General Assembly’s agenda.
The discussions also focused on rallying Arab countries’ efforts to garner more international support for the Palestinian cause. In addition, the ministers addressed upcoming bilateral and continental commitments.
Algeria and Egypt, two of North Africa’s leading political and economic powers, have a long-standing relationship marked by shared strategic interests.
Both countries are influential players in Arab League initiatives and have historically aligned on major regional issues, including support for Palestinian statehood and maintaining stability in Libya.
The United Nations General Assembly, currently in its 79th session, is a critical platform where global leaders convene to discuss pressing international issues.
This year’s high-level discussions are expected to address global security, climate change, and ongoing conflicts in regions like the Middle East and Africa.
For Algeria and Egypt, this is an opportunity to push for collective Arab positions on key issues, particularly the situation in Palestine, where both countries have consistently advocated for a two-state solution and an end to the Israeli occupation.
