Italy has reaffirmed its commitment to assist Ukraine in safeguarding and rebuilding its historical and artistic heritage, as announced by Italy’s Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, on Wednesday.
This pledge comes as part of ongoing efforts to support Ukraine amidst the devastation caused by the ongoing conflict with Russia.
During a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart, Mykola Tuchynsky, Giuli extended an invitation to Ukraine to participate in the upcoming G7 culture ministers’ meeting, scheduled for September 20-21 in Naples, Italy.
Tuchynsky expressed his gratitude for Italy’s strong backing in defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and cultural identity and accepted the invitation.
The upcoming G7 meeting will focus on several key issues, including supporting Ukraine’s efforts to protect and restore its cultural heritage.
Other topics on the agenda include addressing the impact of artificial intelligence on creative industries, combating the illegal trafficking of artworks, and managing the effects of climate change on cultural assets.
Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukraine has faced not only widespread damage to its infrastructure but also significant losses to its rich cultural heritage.
Museums, historical sites, and works of art have been damaged or destroyed in areas affected by Russian missile strikes and ground battles. As a country with a deep appreciation for cultural preservation, Italy has taken a proactive role in aiding Ukraine.
Italy’s involvement reflects its long-standing dedication to cultural preservation, often extending its expertise and resources to countries in need.
