The US Central Command announced on Sunday that it had destroyed a Houthi missile system in the past 24 hours. The statement released on the X platform said, “In the last 24 hours, US Central Command forces successfully destroyed one missile system in a Houthi-controlled area in Yemen.” The command noted that “these weapons posed an imminent threat to US and coalition forces, as well as commercial ships in the region. These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer.”
In related news, the Israeli military reported yesterday that a missile launched from Yemen landed in an open area in central Israel, causing minor injuries to five Israelis due to falling debris from an intercepting missile, according to Israeli ambulance crews. Israeli media reported that the Yemeni missile reached Tel Aviv after penetrating Israeli air defense and the airspace of several Arab countries.
Meanwhile, a Houthi military spokesperson, Brigadier Yahya Saree, announced the execution of a specialized military operation targeting a military site in Jaffa, Israel, with a hypersonic missile. He mentioned that the missile successfully hit its target, and enemy defenses failed to intercept or counter it, traveling 2040 kilometers in 11 and a half minutes.
The US-led coalition against the Houthis in Yemen, known as Operation Prosperity Guardian, was formed in December 2023 in response to Houthi attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. The coalition’s aim is to ensure the safety of international maritime traffic, which has been significantly threatened by Houthi actions, including hijackings and missile attacks on ships. The United States and the United Kingdom, alongside other nations, have conducted airstrikes on Houthi targets within Yemen to deter further attacks and protect one of the world’s most critical commercial routes.
This coalition includes a diverse group of countries, and despite not every nation in the region participating, it represents a significant international effort to counter threats to global trade and regional security.
