Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi welcomed Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in Cairo on Tuesday, marking a significant visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and regional stability. The high-level Iraqi delegation included the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Minister of Trade, and other senior officials.
Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency, stated that the meeting underscored the exceptional level of relations between the two nations, rooted in a historical bond of genuine brotherhood and mutual support. President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s full support for Iraq’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as its efforts toward stability, security, and development.
The leaders agreed that the current regional conditions necessitate an intensification of joint Arab efforts at both bilateral and collective levels. They highlighted the trilateral cooperation mechanism between Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan, affirming their commitment to advancing its projects and achieving its objectives as a model for Arab cooperation and regional integration.
Discussions also covered ongoing cooperation in various fields, particularly efforts to increase mutual and joint investments, as well as cooperation in infrastructure, urban development, tourism, energy, transportation, and industry. The Iraqi Prime Minister praised Egypt’s extensive experience and recognized successes in these sectors.
The spokesperson added that the talks involved an exchange of views on how to navigate the region out of its severe crises that threaten its stability and the well-being of its peoples. Both leaders agreed on the need for de-escalation and reduction of regional tensions.
Furthermore, they emphasized the necessity for the international community to apply substantial pressure to finalize a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. They stressed the urgency of ending the humanitarian tragedy in the region, halting the ongoing Israeli escalation in the West Bank, and initiating a serious political process. This process would ensure the Palestinian people’s legitimate and just right to their independent state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, as a sustainable path to peace, security, and development in the region.
