An Israeli airstrike in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon on Wednesday killed a Fatah official, marking the first such attack on the group in over 10 months of cross-border clashes.

The official, Khalil Makdah, was killed when the strike targeted his car, confirmed Fathi Abu al-Aradat, a senior member of the Palestinian group, and a security source.

Tawfiq Tirawy, a member of Fatah’s central committee, accused Israel of attempting to ignite a regional war, stating that the assassination is further evidence of Israel’s intentions.

The Israeli army confirmed the strike, stating that it targeted Khalil al-Maqdah in the Sidon area, claiming that he and his brother were involved with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in directing attacks and transferring weapons and funds to militants in the occupied West Bank.
