The Chairman of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met with Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji in Port Sudan.
During the meeting, El-Khereiji emphasized Saudi Arabia’s commitment to restoring peace and stability in Sudan, advocating for calm, wisdom, and self-restraint.
The Saudi official highlighted the Kingdom’s dedication to resuming negotiations and showing flexibility and responsiveness to positive and humanitarian initiatives, as reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
El-Khereiji also conveyed Saudi Arabia’s support for all UN and international efforts aimed at achieving a permanent ceasefire and humanitarian initiatives designed to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people.
He underscored the importance of building on the progress made in Jeddah 1 and Jeddah 2.
Sudanese Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Awad, stated that the talks included an invitation to resume the Jeddah platform.
Awad noted that the Chairman of the Sovereign Council affirmed Sudan’s commitment to making the Jeddah platform a success, viewing it as a foundational element.
He stressed the need to implement the agreements reached in May 2023, according to the Sudan News Agency.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that over 328,000 people have been displaced from Al Fasher in North Darfur, Western Sudan, due to fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) over the past three months.
The organization noted that the Displacement Tracking Matrix in Sudan has monitored the ongoing escalation in clashes between the armed forces and the RSF across various locations in Al Fasher.
