Five men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of involvement in crimes against humanity and war crimes in Syria, announced the Federal Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday.

The Prosecutor’s Office explained in a statement that there are “strong suspicions that (the detainees) committed killings or attempted killings against civilians, amounting to crimes against humanity and war crimes” during the civil war that began in Syria in 2011.

Meanwhile, the Swedish Prosecutor’s Office announced on Wednesday that three individuals suspected of committing crimes against humanity in Syria in 2012 have been detained as part of an investigation conducted in Sweden in cooperation with Germany.

Ulrika Benteleus Engerod, the prosecutor leading the investigation, stated, “Thanks to good cooperation with Germany, Eurojust, and Europol (…) we were able to arrest the suspects.” At the same time, Germany arrested five men suspected of committing similar crimes.
