A storm of controversy has erupted on social media platforms in Egypt after an Israeli soldier was photographed wearing a uniform displaying a map of “Greater Israel.”

The map, seen on the soldier’s sleeve during operations in Gaza, did not just outline the borders of present-day Israel but also included vast areas of neighboring countries such as Jordan, Palestine, Lebanon, parts of Syria and Iraq, and Egypt.

The image of the Israeli soldier quickly sparked heated reactions online, with activists commenting that the map reflects an expansionist agenda reminiscent of historical imperial ambitions. Comparisons were drawn to Nazi Germany’s concept of “Lebensraum” or living space.

Activists highlighted that the idea of “Greater Israel” is rooted in certain interpretations of Zionist ideology, which asserts that the biblical Promised Land stretches from the Nile River in Egypt to the Euphrates River in Iraq.

They added, “This interpretation has been contentious since the founding of the Israeli occupation, seen by supporters as the fulfillment of a religious prophecy, while critics condemn it as a justification for territorial expansion at the expense of neighboring countries’ sovereignty.”

The depiction of such a controversial map on an Israeli soldier’s uniform has reignited debates over regional politics and the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, further fueling tensions and concerns over future stability in the Middle East.

The Israeli army recently announced it will implement a limited daily “tactical pause” along one of the main roads in Gaza to facilitate the delivery of increased humanitarian aid.

Despite this pause, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) emphasized that it should not be seen as a “cessation of hostilities in the southern Gaza Strip”.
