The Tunisian government issued a decision today, Saturday, allowing the practice of telemedicine in a move aimed at improving sector services and curbing the migration of doctors.

The Tunisian decision, published in the official gazette, sets specific standards for practicing telemedicine and consulting patients remotely, excluding cases where the patient’s condition does not allow for effective remote consultation.

According to the decision, the Tunisian Minister of Health, after consulting relevant medical and dental bodies and the medical and dental associations, will determine the medical conditions that cannot be treated through telemedicine.

Tunisia had already established the necessary legislation for telemedicine in 2022, following the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying lockdown measures.

The decision is expected to improve services and reduce pressure on the healthcare sector, which suffers from outdated infrastructure and a public transportation crisis. Additionally, the decision will create broader job opportunities in the healthcare sector and help mitigate the emigration of Tunisian doctors abroad.
