The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 241 migrants were intercepted in the Mediterranean Sea and forcibly returned to Libya by the Libyan Coast Guard between June 2 and June 8. The organization added that the total number of migrants intercepted and returned to Libyan territory in 2024 has reached 7,100 migrants so far. Additionally, the IOM noted that there were 282 deaths and 449 missing persons during the first half of the year.

The European Union has been working closely with Libyan authorities to address the challenges posed by illegal immigration. This cooperation includes initiatives to support the voluntary return of migrants to their home countries and efforts to strengthen border security. Italy, in particular, has emphasized the importance of increasing cooperation with Libya and Tunisia to manage and reduce the flow of migrants.

Furthermore, there have been various discussions between European and Libyan officials focusing on developing mechanisms to combat illegal immigration and addressing the associated security and humanitarian issues. The EU Border Assistance Mission in Libya plays a critical role in these efforts, highlighting the need for enhanced collaboration and support for Libyan authorities.
