According to sources reported by “Al-Watan” newspaper, the Syrian Army is conducting its largest campaign yet to sweep the desert and target ISIS cells, aiming to stop their infiltration from the US military base at Al-Tanf.
Field sources in the Syrian desert stated that the campaign, which started over a week ago, primarily aims to close the crossing routes of ISIS terrorists from Al-Tanf and the surrounding 55-kilometre area, where they receive logistical support from the US Army.
Securing the deserts of Sukhnah and Palmyra is the main objective of the Syrian Army’s operation, in addition to the Rasafah Desert south of Raqqa and the western desert of Deir ez-Zor. This effort is intended to protect the international roads passing through the region.
According to the sources, the operation holds significant importance in neutralizing American support for ISIS, which supplies the terrorist cells with the means to sustain and carry out their disruptive and terrorist activities aimed at destabilizing the Syrian desert and its supply routes.
Despite the challenging and expansive terrain covering vast areas of multiple Syrian provinces, the operation is making headway.
The sources confirmed that the army had destroyed numerous fortifications in the deserts of Palmyra, Sukhnah, and Rasafah that ISIS had been rebuilding.
They also discovered caves large enough to house several vehicles used by ISIS cells to hide and execute their terrorist activities. Additionally, the campaign has resulted in the killing and wounding of dozens of terrorists.
