The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, Ageela Saleh, met on Sunday with Stephanie Khoury, the Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), and her accompanying delegation at his office in the city of Al-Qubba.

According to a statement from the House of Representatives media office, the meeting focused on the current situation in Libya and ways to end the ongoing crisis.

Speaker Saleh emphasized that the solution for the African country lies in conducting presidential and parliamentary elections and forming a unified government whose primary task is to facilitate these elections per the will of the Libyan people.

Stephanie Khoury, via her account on X (formerly Twitter), mentioned that her discussion with the House Speaker centred on overcoming the current impasse and advancing the political process.

This includes creating favourable conditions for free and fair elections with acceptable results for all parties.

Khoury stressed the importance of building consensus among all relevant parties to move forward towards peaceful elections that meet the aspirations of Libyans in choosing their leadership and renewing the legitimacy of their institutions.

Mohamed Al-Menfi, head of the Libyan Presidential Council, and Khoury agreed on the necessity of reactivating the security track within the framework of the Libyan dialogue through the Joint Military Committee (5+5).

Both parties looked for ways to make progress towards the preliminary phase of elections and advance the political process amidst the current stalemate.

The talks emphasized the importance of reviving the security path via the (5+5) Committee framework and progressing the human rights track that emerged from the outcomes of the Berlin Conference under the signed protocol.
