Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani asserts that the reasons that justified the formation of the international coalition to fight ISIS ten years ago have ceased to exist. He highlighted the enhanced capabilities of the Iraqi security forces that have successfully countered the ISIS threat.
According to a statement from the Iraqi Cabinet, reported by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), this declaration came during Sudani’s recent official visit to the United States, where he met with several members of the U.S. Congress from both the Republican and Democratic parties.
During these meetings, the Iraqi Prime Minister emphasized Iraq’s commitment to the outcomes of ongoing dialogues within the High Military Committee between Iraq and the United States, stressing the importance of transitioning the relationship between the two countries to a comprehensive bilateral partnership across various fields of exchange and development.
“The Iraq of today is strong because of its historical and social ties with neighboring countries, including Iran, and at the same time, it maintains an important strategic relationship with the United States,” Sudani explained. He added that Iraq’s resources and strategic location are pivotal for establishing a vital economic position that benefits the interests of people in the region.
Sudani also highlighted Iraq’s continued partnership with the international community to combat terrorism, noting that the Iraqi people have courageously faced the horrors of terrorism more than most nations.
He described the sustainable relationship Iraq aims to build with the United States, based on mutual understanding and convergence between the peoples of both nations, extending beyond government and administrative boundaries.
