Top EU diplomat Josep Borrell explained to CNN that the European Union’s backing of Ukraine stems from strategic interests rather than pure affection for its people.
He emphasized that allowing Russia to triumph in the conflict would harm both US and European interests.
Borrell stressed that supporting Ukraine isn’t solely an act of generosity or love for its people but aligns with the EU and Washington’s interests as global players and reliable allies.
“It is in our own interests, and it is also in the interests of the US as a global player, the one who has to be perceived as a reliable partner and a security provider to the allies. This is why we call on the US to open and approve the supplementary budget,” he pointed out.
He urged the US to approve the supplementary budget, indicating the EU’s commitment to expedite and enhance support for Ukraine.
The EU, reaffirming its stance after a March 22 summit, declared its determination to stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary and with utmost intensity.
Earlier this month, the EU disbursed the first instalment of €4.5 billion from its new €50 billion financing instrument to support Ukraine’s budget until the end of 2027.
This significant financial aid was announced during the first meeting of the Association Council between the union and Ukraine in Brussels.
During the meeting, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal presented a comprehensive plan for reforms and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine, particularly in the face of ongoing aggression from Russia.
