German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is considering the UK Foreign Secretary’s idea of exchanging cruise missiles to equip Ukraine with advanced long-range weaponry.
The suggestion, made by UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, was labeled as a viable option by Baerbock during an ARD television interview on Sunday.
Cameron, in a conversation with the Süddeutsche Zeitung, emphasized the desire to collaborate closely with Germany to assist Ukraine.
According to his plan, Germany would send Taurus missiles to the UK, which would then supply Ukraine with Storm Shadow missiles from its inventory.
Germany hesitates to send its Taurus missiles to Ukraine due to their stealth and extended range capabilities, fearing they might be used to target locations inside Russia, potentially escalating the conflict.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has resisted sending these missiles to Ukraine despite requests.
Germany has previously engaged in “ring swaps” to indirectly support Ukraine with military equipment, including tanks, and is facing internal calls to reconsider its stance on the Taurus missiles.
Baerbock has expressed support for sending the missiles to Ukraine for several months.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski revealed that some NATO countries have already deployed their military forces to Ukraine, stating that NATO soldiers are indeed present in Ukraine.
The minister clarified that he would not disclose which countries have sent their forces there.
