More than 30 people were injured in a subway incident during rush hour in Beijing on Thursday.
The incident occurred when two train cars separated from the rest of the train on an elevated section of the track, according to authorities.
Beijing, the Chinese capital, where such accidents are rare, has experienced snowstorms in recent days, but the cause of the incident was not immediately clear.
The Beijing General Transport Directorate reported on the social media platform Weibo, “The accident site has been cleared, and all the injured have been transported to the hospital for treatment.”
It further stated, “We have recorded more than 30 injuries so far, with no reported fatalities.”
Authorities said the incident occurred at 18:57 (10:57 AM UTC) when the last two cars of the subway train separated from the rest of the front cars.
Social media users reported seeing passengers falling to the ground and others complaining of back pain.
Images published by local media showed passengers on the ground and partial lighting failure, while some passengers used emergency hammers to try to break the train car windows to exit.
Other videos showed firefighters assisting in evacuating an elderly passenger, while those trapped in the incident had to make their way through heavy snow to leave the scene.
The train was running above ground when the incident occurred near Shierke Station. The incident took place as the train was heading towards the Changping area in the northern part of the city.
