Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, stated that India and Brazil are serious candidates for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council, as reported by “Russia Today.”
Gatilov emphasized the increasing demand for reforming the Security Council.
He added that to enhance the effectiveness of the Security Council, representation of developing countries from Africa, Asia, and Latin America must be expanded.
He noted that Russia considers Brazil and India to be strong candidates for permanent seats on the Council if a decision is made to expand the UN Security Council, whether among permanent or non-permanent members.
Gatilov pointed out that the reform of the Security Council is increasingly necessary to address the lack of representation of developing countries, while the West is overrepresented.
He stated, “The modern structure of global governance does not fully align with geopolitical realities. New centers of political and economic influence on the world map must be taken into account, contributing to building a more just and democratic global system. Multilateral principles in international affairs must be truly reinforced.”
