The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the death of 18 individuals and the destruction of 26 targets in airstrikes conducted by American aircraft over a distance of approximately 130 kilometers in Deir ez-Zor province, eastern Syria. The London-based Observatory stated in a statement published on the night of Friday/Saturday: “American aircraft carried out rounds of aerial targeting at locations spanning about 130 kilometers from the city of Deir ez-Zor to the Syrian-Iraqi border, passing through Mayadin.”

The Observatory noted: “During these rounds, 26 significant sites of Iranian militias were targeted. In the city of Mayadin, sites in Al-Tamou neighborhood, Ain Ali base near Rahba Castle, Al-Shibli, Al-Haidariya, and the grain silos were bombed.”

It was mentioned that in Al-Bukamal, near the Syrian-Iraqi border, several locations in Al-Hajana and Al-Hari were targeted, and in the city of Deir ez-Zor, sites of Iranian militias near the former College of Education, the surroundings of the Iranian kitchen, near the radars, Tab Harabish, Huwayjat Sakr, and Ayash warehouses were targeted.

According to the Observatory, the strikes resulted in the death of 18 militia members, in a toll that is not final for those strikes. The American military had launched raids the previous night on over 85 targets in Deir ez-Zor, Mayadin, and Al-Bukamal in Syria and Iraq, in response to a deadly attack by Iran-backed militias, which resulted in the death of three American soldiers in Jordan.

The recent airstrikes in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, conducted by the United States, targeted Iranian-backed militants in response to escalating tensions and hostile activities that threaten the stability of the region and the safety of American forces and their allies. These airstrikes were a part of a broader response to the deadly drone attack that killed three American soldiers in Jordan, which was attributed to Iranian proxy groups closely linked to Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The US has made it clear that it will not tolerate attacks on its interests and personnel, indicating a “tiered response” over time to such provocations.

The airstrikes aimed to degrade the capabilities of the militants and disrupt their operations, focusing on specific positions of the Iran-backed militants without targeting the Syrian government or its military. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with some countries expressing support for the US action, while others call for restraint and a diplomatic solution to the conflict. The US remains committed to protecting its interests and ensuring the safety of its personnel and allies, while also supporting the Syrian people in their quest for stability and security.

A US website has reported that President Joe Biden issued a final warning to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, threatening to halt aid to Israel if it does not alter its approach in the Gaza conflict. According to the site, which cited three informed individuals, President Biden delivered this ultimatum to Prime Minister Netanyahu during a phone call on Thursday, stating that if Israel does not change its course in Gaza, "we will no longer be able to assist you." Axios pointed out that Biden did not specify what losing American support would entail, nor did he mention the possibility of stopping the delivery of weapons to Israel. The sources described the conversation as the "toughest" in terms of tone and content since October 7th between Biden and Netanyahu. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that Netanyahu informed Biden that Israel had agreed, following an attack on volunteers at the Global Central Kitchen in Gaza, to modify its warfare methods to protect humanitarian workers assisting Palestinian civilians. On Friday, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution calling for Israel to be held accountable for potential war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza, despite Israel's rejection of the resolution as a "distorted text." For the past six months, the Israeli military has continued to bombard Gaza, destroying entire neighborhoods, displacing 1.7 million out of 2.4 million residents, and causing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis, according to the United Nations. On October 7th, Hamas fighters launched an attack on southern Israel, killing 1,200 Israelis, according to official Israeli figures. In response to the Hamas attack, Israel vowed to "eliminate" the movement and launched a major offensive on Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of more than 33,000 Palestinians, the vast majority being women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
