British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz agreed during a phone call on the importance of allies continuing to support Ukraine and of supporting stability in the Middle East.

A statement on the British government’s website said that Sunak briefed Scholz on his recent visit to Kyiv, including the signing of an agreement between the United Kingdom and Ukraine on security cooperation and the announcement of a £2.5 billion additional military aid package for Ukraine.

The two leaders agreed on the “vitality” of Western support for Ukraine for European and global security, and on providing the Ukrainian armed forces with the weapons they need to defeat Russia. They also discussed broader cooperation in the field of defense and security, including supporting regional stability in the Middle East.

The sides also discussed the common European challenge of illegal migration, noting the importance of strong joint action across the continent to deal with criminal gangs that smuggle people. They agreed to continue working closely together on this issue, including through Italy’s presidency of the G7.
