Tunisia has submitted a request to be included on the list of countries that will present oral arguments at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israeli violations against the Palestinian people, the Foreign Ministry announced on Wednesday.

The ministry said that Tunisia submitted the request on December 14, 2023, with the approval of President Kais Saied. The ministry added that a national expert in international law will prepare the arguments, and that the oral hearings will begin at the ICJ’s headquarters on February 19.

The ministry explained that this work is part of the advisory opinion that the UN General Assembly requested from the ICJ on the legal consequences of the ongoing violation by the occupying entity of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, and of its prolonged occupation of the occupied Palestinian territories, its settlement and annexation of them, including measures to change the demographic composition of the holy city of Jerusalem and its character and status.

Tunisia said that it will strive in its arguments to reveal the truth of the lack of international legitimacy of the occupying entity and its serious violation of the fundamental conventions and principles of international law. The ministry stressed that Tunisia cannot make any concessions from its firm position on the Palestinian issue.
