European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed deep concern on Saturday about the potential for Lebanon to be drawn into a broader regional conflict stemming from Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas.

During his visit to Lebanon, Borrell emphasized the urgency of preventing a regional escalation in the Middle East and issued a warning to Israel, emphasizing that “nobody will win from a regional conflict.”

In a press conference with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati following discussions with top government officials, Borrell underscored the need to intensify efforts to restart the Peace Process. He urged Israel to reconsider its goal of eradicating Hamas, stating, “There must be another way to eradicate Hamas; another way that does not result in the loss of innocent lives.”

The EU foreign policy chief commented on the escalating exchange of fire along the Blue Line, the current demarcation between Israel and Lebanon established by the United Nations. Borrell expressed concern over the situation and highlighted the need for diplomatic efforts to address events in and around Gaza, including the impact of the war and the tense situation at the Israeli-Lebanese border.
