Iraq’s President, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, emphasized the urgent need for robust strategic plans to combat desertification in Iraq during a meeting in Dubai with the Iraqi delegations participating in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). The meeting, held at the President’s residence in the Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, included members of the Iraqi Parliament and experts in the fields of environment, energy, and technology.
President Rashid praised the Iraqi delegations for their distinguished efforts in deepening Iraq’s international relations in various sectors, contributing to the country’s supreme interests. He stressed the necessity of new water agreements with upstream countries and supported the government’s endeavors in this regard.
Rashid highlighted the importance of enhancing coordination mechanisms and communication between the Presidency, the Cabinet, and the Parliament. He called for a unified action plan and concerted efforts to strengthen Iraq’s decision-making and negotiation strategies with international parties, aiming for outcomes beneficial to the nation.
The President also pointed out the positive outcomes of his meetings with world leaders and organizations at COP28. These interactions are expected to pave the way for strategic partnerships in economic, technological, investment, environmental, and energy sectors, further integrating Iraq into the regional and global community.
The meeting was attended by notable figures, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, Minister of Environment Nizar Amidi, several members of Parliament, experts, and advisors. This gathering underscores Iraq’s commitment to addressing climate change challenges and its readiness to collaborate on global environmental issues.
