Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the Secretary-General of the Arab League, has warned against the Israeli government’s intent to build thousands of settlements in the occupied West Bank.

He has suggested that these plans undermine the two-state solution by encroaching upon the lands meant for the future Palestinian state.

Aboul Gheit has urged the U.S. administration to adopt a firm stance against the anticipated Israeli plans, in defense of the two-state solution advocated by Washington.

He affirmed that settlements would undermine peace and make it impossible to discuss a resolution between Palestinians and Israelis, or peace in the region, while Palestinian lands are being eroded daily.

Jamal Rashdi, the spokesperson for the Secretary-General, clarified that there are circulating reports in media platforms regarding the issue. He highlighted that the Israeli right-wing government is seeking a green light from the U.S. to proceed with their plans.

Quoting Aboul Gheit, Rashdi said that the Netanyahu government refuses to participate in a peaceful political process leading to a comprehensive resolution. Their primary and ultimate concern is to satisfy the most extreme factions in the domestic political landscape and appease the settlement groups and nationalist religious currents.
