Libya’s Ministry of Interior under the interim Government of National Unity discussed security cooperation with its Turkish counterpart to implement a coastal guard training plan in 2024.

This was confirmed during a meeting held by the Undersecretary for Public Affairs of the Ministry of Interior, Major General Mahmoud Saeed, at the ministry’s headquarters with the Turkish Coastal Guard’s training advisor, Colonel Ismail Algar. The meeting was attended by the Director of the General Administration for Coastal Security, Major General Bashir Binour.

According to a statement published on the ministry’s Facebook page, the meeting reviewed the progress of the training process for members of the General Administration for Coastal Security. They discussed the training curriculum, the achievements of the year 2023, and training plans for the upcoming year 2024.

That operation and others like it are reportedly part of Turkey’s programme to train the Libyan coast guard and military, which serves the purpose of improving Libya’s newly unified forces and maintaining a long-term Turkish presence and influence in the country.

Such programmes are replacing those by European states such as Italy and agencies such as the European Union’s Frontex, which previously trained the Libyan coast guard and provided them with patrol vessels.
