In a bid to end the relentless shelling of Gaza by Israeli occupation forces, Qatar has reportedly escalated its mediation efforts.

Since October 7, civilians and infrastructure in Gaza have been under constant attack, prompting Qatar to take a lead role in negotiations aimed at securing a temporary ceasefire.

According to an anonymous source quoted by AFP, ongoing talks mediated by Qatar, in collaboration with the US, are focused on securing the release of 10-15 hostages.

The proposed deal involves a one-to-two day ceasefire in exchange for the hostages’ freedom.

Qatar’s involvement in mediation has been significant, particularly in facilitating the release of hostages held by Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement governing Gaza.

Notably, four captives were released with public denials of reported abuse by the Palestinian militant group.

Despite these efforts, it remains uncertain whether Israel will agree to a ceasefire. The country has escalated its airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza, targeting civilians in residential areas, shelters, schools, hospitals, and even places of worship.

As of today, the Palestinian Health Ministry reports that Israel has caused the deaths of at least 10,500 people, including over 4,300 children, since October 7.

The ongoing Israeli aggression has also resulted in injuries to more than 26,000 Palestinians. The international community watches closely as mediation efforts unfold in the hopes of bringing a temporary halt to the devastating conflict.

5 Workers Killed in Train Accident in Italy An empty passenger train hit railway workers at high speed close to a station in Italy, killing five people. Authorities revealed that the workers, aged between 22 and 52, were replacing part of a track outside the northern city of Turin when they were killed. They had been working on the line between Turin and Milan when the train went through Brandizzo station at a reported 160km/h (100mph). Mayor Paolo Bodoni stated that an investigation was under way. Meanwhile, two workers survived unscathed but were taken to hospital for observation. The reports said the train driver was treated at the scene for shock but later sent home. He is expected to be questioned later about the deadly incident. On its part, the Italian railway network (RFI) expressed its "deep sorrow" for the incident. It also sent its "deep condolences" to the families of those who died. Bodoni described the incident as "chilling" and a "huge tragedy". The mayor of Brandizzo, a small town to the north-east of Turin, said he would wait until the outcome of the inquiry but a communication error could not be ruled out.
