US Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed on Sunday that the Biden administration has received reports indicating that several Americans may have been killed in the ongoing conflict in Israel. In an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union,” Blinken stated, “Yes, we have reports that several Americans were killed. We’re working overtime to verify that.”
He further acknowledged reports of missing Americans and emphasized ongoing efforts to verify those reports, refraining from providing a specific estimate.
The conflict escalated when the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas launched a surprise attack, unleashing a barrage of rockets into Israel along with a ground assault on Saturday. Israeli officials reported that more than 600 citizens have been killed, and 2,000 have been wounded in the fighting. In response, Israel invoked Article 40 Aleph, marking the nation’s first formally declared war since 1973.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed “mighty vengeance,” underscoring Israel’s determination in the conflict. Meanwhile, Palestinian sources reported over 313 deaths and 1,990 individuals missing, including 20 children killed and 121 injured, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Blinken condemned the violence, expressing the Biden administration’s support for the Jewish State. He emphasized the government’s active engagement, stating, “We’ve been on the phones throughout our government over the last 24 hours.”
Highlighting a key difference from past conflicts, Blinken underscored that the current situation is not a conventional war but a “massive terrorist attack on Israeli civilians.” He condemned the indiscriminate firing of rockets targeting civilians and the forced displacement of men, women, and children. The conflict remains a deeply concerning and evolving situation, with international efforts ongoing to address the crisis and promote peace in the region.
