The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), in the UAE, has announced its commitment to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80%.

ADNOC revealed today that its Ruwais refinery has been awarded the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) for the production of sustainable aviation fuel.

This milestone makes ADNOC the first company in the Middle East to receive this prestigious international recognition, highlighting the company’s steadfast commitment to collaborate with its customers in accelerating emissions reduction efforts.

Under the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), ADNOC will supply international airlines at Abu Dhabi International Airport with sustainable aviation fuel produced using used cooking oil as a feedstock blended with conventional jet fuel at the Ruwais refinery.

The first batch of sustainable aviation fuel, sufficient for a Dreamliner 787-10 flight from Abu Dhabi to Paris, is expected to be made available later this month.

As of early 2021, more than 350,000 passenger flights worldwide have already been conducted using environmentally friendly aviation fuels, according to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

ADNOC continues to make significant strides towards cleaner energy and practical steps to make today’s energy cleaner while investing in future clean energies to enhance its position as a trusted and responsible global energy provider.

In its ongoing support of the UAE’s strategic climate neutrality initiative by 2050, ADNOC recently announced plans to accelerate its climate neutrality target to 2045, five years ahead of schedule.
