In a ground-breaking initiative, Ukrainian authorities have declared their intent to build the nation’s first entirely subterranean school in the eastern city of Kharkiv, which has frequently found itself the target of recurrent Russian attacks.
Kharkiv’s Mayor, Ihor Terekhov, revealed via the Telegram app that the primary motivation behind constructing the underground school is to “protect students from recurring Russian attacks involving bombs and missiles,” according to Alhurra website. He further elaborated, “A refuge like this will enable thousands of Kharkiv’s children to continue their direct safe education, even amidst missile threats.”
While a significant number of schools in frontline areas have been compelled to shift to remote learning throughout the war, Kharkiv managed to establish approximately 60 separate classrooms in metro stations before the commencement of the school year on September 1st. This initiative has provided ample space for over a thousand pupils.
Kharkiv, being the second-largest city in Ukraine and once home to over 1.4 million individuals prior to the Russian invasion in February 2022, has witnessed considerable turmoil and disruption. This innovative underground school represents more than a construction project; it is a symbol of resilience and a pragmatic solution to ensuring the continuity of education amidst a backdrop of conflict and crisis.
