Tunisia’s tennis sensation, Ons Jabeur, asserted her dominance in the Ningbo Open final, delivering an impressive performance to defeat Diana Shnaider 6-2, 6-1.
Jabeur, currently holding the seventh spot in the women’s rankings, secured her fifth WTA Tour title in just 78 minutes in China. Despite being a late wildcard entrant, the 29-year-old showcased her prowess, unleashing 18 winners against her opponent, the 85th-ranked Shnaider, aged 19.
Expressing her aspirations, Jabeur remarked, “These are little steps to winning a Grand Slam final,” acknowledging her quest for a major title. Despite falling short in three Grand Slam finals over the past 15 months, including twice at Wimbledon and once at the US Open, Jabeur remains determined and optimistic.
Reflecting on her victory in the Ningbo Open, she stated, “Playing a final here is more relaxed than playing a Grand Slam final, but I think it will help me gain confidence more, and to help me manage the pressure and stress.”
Meanwhile, at the Pan Pacific Open in Japan, American tennis player Jessica Pegula secured her spot in the final by defeating Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-3. Pegula credited the faster courts for favoring her style of play, stating, “The faster courts here probably help me a little more than the slower surfaces I’ve played on in the past. I tried to take advantage of that.”
Pegula is set to face off against Veronika Kudermetova in the final, who emerged victorious after a grueling battle against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, prevailing 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (2-7), 6-3 in a match lasting three hours and 25 minutes in Tokyo. Despite the physical demands, Kudermetova expressed confidence, stating, “Physically I feel OK. I can play another match like that. Physically I’m always strong. Mentally maybe sometimes not enough.”
