The Tunisian Minister of Commerce and Export Development, Kalthoum Ben Rajeb Al-Qazah, underscored the significance of the General Secretariat’s project on “Land Trade Corridors” for North African countries. This initiative aims to fortify and augment trade exchanges with Sub-Saharan African nations.
The statement came during the minister’s meeting, as reported in an official communique released today, Monday, with a high-level delegation from the General Secretariat for the African Continental Free Trade Area (ZLECAf). The delegation’s working visit spans from August 14 to 18.
According to the aforementioned statement, the involved parties highlighted the project’s pivotal role in advancing trade exchanges for member countries within the region, further facilitating the flow of Tunisian goods and access to the rest of the continent. This is particularly true for landlocked countries like Chad, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The initiative’s economic viability, trade advantages, and anticipated positive outcomes were also discussed.
It’s worth noting that the “Corridor Approach,” adopted by the General Secretariat of the Continental Zone during the 25th regular session of the African Union Council held in February 2022, is an economic program intended to link and facilitate border crossings among member states. Its aim is to ease intra-regional trade. Five corridors have been established across various parts of the continent, and this initiative marks the first for the North African region.
