Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme National Committee overseeing preparations for the 28th session of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change “COP28”, welcomed John Kerry, the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Affairs.

During their meeting held in Abu Dhabi, the two leaders discussed the strategic relations between the two nations and the existing partnerships across various sectors, with a special emphasis on climate issues. Talks also delved into the UAE’s efforts in global climate action, boosting mutual cooperation, and multilateral actions in line with the UAE’s hosting of the COP28 later this year in Expo City, Dubai.

Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and John Kerry explored joint initiatives in the climate sector, including the comprehensive UAE-US investment in clean energy initiative aimed at enhancing shared climate goals and global energy security. This initiative plans to invest $100 billion to generate an additional 100 gigawatts of clean energy in the UAE, the United States, and emerging economies worldwide by 2035.

During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah emphasized the UAE’s unwavering approach in enhancing cooperation with the global community and promoting multilateral actions to confront the challenges of climate change. He noted that the existing partnership between the UAE and the United States in the climate sector and the resulting initiatives and projects serve as a leading model for joint efforts towards a climate-secure world enjoying sustainable economic development and prosperity.

Sheikh Abdullah asserted that the UAE is committed to leading global efforts to address climate change from the stage of pledging to the implementation of concrete measures during its hosting of the COP28 summit.

The meeting was also attended by His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmad Al Jaber, the UAE’s Special Envoy for Climate Change and the appointed President of the COP28 Conference.
