Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi emphasized the need for practical and immediate measures to create the necessary conditions for the voluntary return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.

His remarks came at a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi in Amman, where he called on relevant United Nations organizations to promptly launch these initiatives.

Safadi indicated that the future of Syrian refugees lies in their home country, not in Jordan. He stressed the importance of focusing efforts on providing the requirements for a dignified return and living conditions for refugees within Syria.

“The prioritization of facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland remains a paramount concern, and the Kingdom will continue to collaborate with all parties to achieve this goal,” he said.

Safadi and Grandi discussed the outcomes of talks between the Jordanian government and the UN High Commissioner’s office, focusing on the necessary guarantees.

Additionally, they touched upon collaboration with the international community to establish the infrastructure capable of providing the refugees with necessary services, living conditions, and economic support.

The meeting also covered the steps and programs carried out by the UN High Commissioner’s office and other UN organizations related to refugees, as well as the required plans to encourage voluntary return.

In the same vein, the minister emphasized the ongoing need to work with the Syrian government and the international community to meet the requirements for the return of approximately one thousand Syrian refugees.

Jordan currently hosts around 1.3 million Syrian siblings, with only ten percent of them residing in refugee camps.

Hence, Safadi highlighted the necessity of intensifying targeted efforts to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis, addressing all its humanitarian, security, and political implications, and ending the suffering of the Syrian people.
