An official from Syria’s Immigration and Passport Authority reported on Monday that nearly 400,000 individuals have fled to Syria due to Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
According to the source, between September 22 and October 18, 395,485 people entered Syria from Lebanon, including 124,450 Lebanese displaced persons and 271,035 Syrians returning to their homeland.
The Syrian Ministry of Health disclosed on its website that over 28,000 foreigners received more than 56,000 free medical services within a 26-day period.
The medical aid included surgeries, emergency care, mental and reproductive health services, and essential vaccinations for children and women of childbearing age.
Human Rights Watch has criticized recent Israeli strikes on the main Lebanon-Syria border crossing, which have hindered the escape of displaced persons and disrupted humanitarian aid operations, posing “serious risks” to civilians.
The organization stated that even if an Israeli attack targeted a legitimate military objective, it might still be deemed unlawful if it was expected to cause disproportionate civilian damage relative to the anticipated military gain.
Since September 23, Israel has expanded its military engagement, which began in Gaza on October 7, 2023, to encompass all regions of Lebanon through unprecedented airstrikes and a ground incursion in the south.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that the Israeli aggression in the past two days resulted in 36 deaths and 204 injuries, bringing the total casualties since the start of the conflict to 2,448 killed and 11,471 wounded.
