A prison riot in Guayaquil, Ecuador, resulted in the death of 31 inmates, with 14 others injured.

The violent clash between rival gangs at the overcrowded Guayas 1 prison led to a deadly confrontation that involved drug-trafficking linked prison gangs.

The authorities took control of the facility with the help of 2,700 soldiers after a riot that had started on the weekend escalated.

The country has witnessed a series of bloody clashes in its prisons since 2021, claiming at least 420 lives.

The prison system’s corruption and ease of access to weapons and explosives have exacerbated the violence, leaving many victims beheaded, burned, or shot during the gang conflicts.
