In a recent Israeli airstrike targeting the southern suburbs of Beirut last Friday, 20 senior leaders of Hezbollah’s elite forces were killed, according to a report from the American news site Axios. The Israeli military confirmed the death of Ibrahim Aqil, the head of Hezbollah’s military operations and commander of the elite Al-Radwan forces, as well as 20 other senior officials within the group.

An Israeli official described the assassination as a “significant blow” to Hezbollah’s military command and control structure. This comes after the killing of Fuad Shukr in an Israeli strike in July, after which Aqil assumed a higher military leadership role within Hezbollah. Aqil, a founder of Hezbollah’s military wing, is wanted in the United States for his involvement in the 1983 Beirut U.S. Embassy bombings, which resulted in 63 deaths, and the Marine barracks bombing in October 1983 that killed 241 Americans.

Hezbollah acknowledged the deaths of its leaders Ibrahim Aqil, Hajj Abdul Qader, and commanders Ahmad Mahmoud Wahbi and Hajj Abu Hussein Samir in the Israeli strike on the southern suburbs of Beirut early Saturday morning.

The tensions between Hezbollah and Israel have escalated significantly since October 2023, following a series of attacks and retaliations that have intensified the conflict to levels not seen since the 2006 Lebanon War. The situation worsened after Hezbollah launched rocket strikes against Israel in solidarity with Palestinians following a Hamas attack. This prompted Israel to retaliate, marking a significant increase in the hostilities which now include more advanced weaponry and daily exchanges of fire.

Israel’s recent strategies have included targeted airstrikes in Lebanon aimed at Hezbollah’s leadership and military infrastructure. This includes the significant strike that reportedly killed a top Hezbollah commander, Ibrahim Aqil, among other senior figures in the organization. The U.S. officials have expressed concerns that this could lead to further escalation, fearing a potential all-out regional conflict. Despite these concerns, both sides have so far managed to keep the hostilities below the threshold of full-scale war, although the situation remains highly volatile.

Analysts note that both Israel and Hezbollah are testing each other’s limits, adjusting their tactics and strategies in real-time, which includes the use of more sophisticated military technology. This dynamic has created a precarious situation where miscalculations could easily spiral into a larger conflict.
