A local Syrian official reported today that two individuals were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a vehicle in Quneitra, southern Syria.
According to the local source quoted by Sham FM Radio, the strike hit the vehicle near Khan Arnabeh, east of Quneitra on Damascus Road.
The Golan Heights, a strategic plateau overlooking northern Israel and southern Syria, has been a flashpoint for regional tensions for decades.
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War in 1967 and subsequently annexed the territory, a move not recognized internationally. Since then, the area has frequently been a site of military confrontations.
The Israeli government has justified its strikes in Syria as measures to counteract perceived threats from Iranian-backed militias and other hostile entities operating within Syrian territory.
These operations are often described as part of Israel’s broader strategy to prevent the entrenchment of Iranian forces near its borders.
The Syrian civil war, ongoing since 2011, has further complicated the situation. The conflict has seen a myriad of international actors becoming involved, including Israel, which has carried out numerous airstrikes in Syria aimed at targeting arms transfers and military infrastructure linked to Iran and its allies.
The recent airstrike in Quneitra highlights the continued volatility in the region and the ongoing military dynamics between Israel and Syria.
The frequent clashes and airstrikes are a stark reminder of the persistent tensions in the area and the broader geopolitical conflicts affecting the Middle East.
