Two Arab immigrants lost their lives in separate shooting incidents over the weekend in the state of New York.
One of the victims, 86-year-old Hamoo Saeidi from Yemen, was fatally shot while on his daily walk by a 25-year-old suspect who went on a shooting spree while riding a scooter. Saeidi had immigrated to the US from Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in 1962, in search of a better life, as shared by his son.
The shooter, identified as Thomas Abreau, was apprehended on Sunday, but the motive behind the six random shootings remains unknown. The Associated Press reported that three other individuals were injured in the shootings that occurred in Brooklyn and New York City.
Abreau has been charged with murder and attempted murder. The New York Police Department swiftly responded to the incidents, identifying the gunman through video footage and apprehending him a few hours after the initial shooting.
In a separate incident, a 35-year-old Jordanian man named Bassam Abdel Rahman al-Khatib was shot and killed during an armed robbery at the convenience store where he worked.
The incident, captured on security footage, occurred when two masked individuals entered the store and fatally shot him.
Authorities are conducting investigations to determine the motives behind these senseless acts of violence.
