Renewed clashes erupted today, Saturday, in Nyala, the capital city of South Darfur state, between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), resulting in casualties and injuries among civilians.
Eyewitnesses reported to “Erm News” that the clashes have been ongoing since Friday in densely populated neighborhoods like “Al Jeer,” “Al Wadi,” and “Kerri.” The RSF forces are attempting to besiege the headquarters of the 16th Infantry Division belonging to the army.
The Darfur Lawyers’ Association confirmed in a statement that 16 civilians were killed during the clashes on Friday in Nyala city, as shells hit citizens’ homes in residential areas, including “Al Wahda” and “Kerri South Nyala.”
The statement mentioned that among the casualties was an entire family, with only one person surviving. It also highlighted the evacuation of neighborhoods in the city center and the displacement of residents to areas south of Nyala. However, the battles have also spread to those areas.
The Association warned of the possibility of a comprehensive chaos in South Darfur state and Nyala city if the situation continues on this trajectory.
Moreover, the Darfur Lawyers’ Association cautioned against the phenomenon of conducting battles in residential neighborhoods and targeting civilians, with the random firing of shells in streets and homes, and sniper killings.
