The U.S. National Security Team briefed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on Wednesday on “developments in the Middle East,” according to a White House announcement. This briefing comes amid growing concerns about potential retaliatory strikes from Iran against Israel.

The White House statement detailed that the President and Vice President were informed in the Situation Room about “U.S. military efforts to support Israel’s defense” and “ongoing diplomatic efforts to de-escalate regional tensions.” The discussions also covered negotiations related to hostages and efforts to reach a ceasefire.

Recent weeks have seen escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, largely triggered by the assassination of senior figures associated with Hamas and Hezbollah, allegedly by Israeli forces. These actions have prompted strong threats of retaliation from Iran and its allied militias, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and various other groups across the Middle East.

Iran and its proxies have been preparing for a coordinated, large-scale attack on Israel, which many fear could lead to a broader conflict in the region. The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the killing of senior Hezbollah officials have further inflamed the situation, leading to increased military activity and diplomatic efforts to prevent a full-scale war. The U.S. has been actively involved in trying to defuse the situation, urging restraint on all sides while supporting Israel’s defensive measures.
