The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan reported that over 20 million Sudanese are threatened by food insecurity. Of these, six million are on the brink of famine. The agency also highlighted that four million children suffer from malnutrition-related ailments.

Mohamed Jamal, the National Media Officer for the WFP, during a media briefing in Port Sudan, revealed that war has displaced seven million Sudanese. This displacement has strained services in the host states.

The WFP has provided food aid to three million affected by the conflict, targeting a total of six million with food assistance.

The program requires $350 million to meet the food needs of those impacted by the war in Sudan by the end of this year.

Several challenges hinder the program, including ongoing conflicts, expanding war zones, and the absence of safe corridors. These factors have affected the agricultural season and the delivery of aid to war-impacted areas.

Jamal emphasized not relying on the military for aid delivery, stating coordination occurs through the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
