The U.S. State Department has imposed sanctions on two Israeli settlers, one described as a “violent” settler and the other as the CEO and director of the Israeli organization Hashomer Yosh.
According to a statement from the U.S. State Department released Wednesday, the actions of these individuals have contributed to creating an environment where violence and instability thrive, and their actions—both collectively and individually—undermine peace, security, and stability in the West Bank.
Simultaneously, the U.S. Treasury Department has designated “Hilltop Youth,” a violent extremist group that has overrun Palestinian communities in the West Bank, carrying out killings, mass arson, and other attacks known as “price tag” attacks. These attacks aim to retaliate against and intimidate Palestinian civilians. The “Hilltop Youth” organization has repeatedly clashed with the Israeli military when it has attempted to counteract the group’s destructive activities.
The statement added: “We call on the Israeli government to take action and hold accountable the violent actors, such as those designated today. We will continue to use our tools to promote accountability for violence that threatens peace and stability in the region, regardless of the national origin, ethnicity, or religion of those committing such violence.”
